What You’ll Do
As a mid-senior Ruby on Rails Engineer, you’ll take ownership of back-end services that power scheduling, dispatching, invoicing, and payment flows for over 27,000 home service businesses. You’ll work directly with product managers and designers to decompose complex feature requests into clean, maintainable code. Every day you’ll balance shipping new functionality with pragmatic refactoring of legacy components, ensuring the core platform remains fast, reliable, and easy to extend.
You’ll participate in code reviews that are thorough but kind, help define the team’s technical roadmap through architecture decision records, and occasionally pair with less experienced developers to level up the entire group. This is a hands-on role where you’ll be expected to investigate production incidents, profile slow queries, and ship observability improvements that keep our uptime above 99.9%.
- Design and implement RESTful APIs consumed by our React front end and native mobile apps.
- Optimize PostgreSQL queries and background job queues for high-throughput financial transactions.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal Ruby gems shared across product squads.
Our Technical Environment
We run one of the largest Ruby on Rails monoliths in the home services space, carefully modularized into engines and bounded contexts. Our primary database is PostgreSQL, with Redis powering Sidekiq job queues that process millions of invoices, payment settlements, and SMS notifications each month. The platform is hosted on AWS, managed through Terraform and Kubernetes, and we deploy to production multiple times per day using fully automated CI/CD pipelines built on GitHub Actions.
On the back end, we’ve embraced a service-oriented evolution: teams are gradually extracting high-churn domains like pricing engines and customer messaging into focused Rails services. You’ll work with tools like RuboCop, RSpec, and Datadog to keep code quality high and incidents visible. Local development is containerized with Docker, so you can spin up the entire stack in minutes and test changes against realistic data sets.
We believe in framework defaults where they fit, but our engineers regularly dig into low-level Active Record internals and custom Rack middleware when the product demands it. If you enjoy shaping developer experience—from better seeds to faster test suites—you’ll find plenty of opportunities here.
Who You’ll Work With
You’ll join a remote-first engineering organization of over 200 developers spread across the Americas. Each squad is a cross-functional team of four to six engineers, a product manager, and a dedicated designer. You’ll collaborate primarily via Slack, Zoom, and Linear, with most teams running daily standups and weekly backlog refinement sessions that respect your time zone. Engineers in South America typically share working hours with colleagues in Denver and San Diego, giving you real-time overlap for brainstorming and pair programming.
Beyond your immediate squad, you’ll interact regularly with the infrastructure, data, and payments platform teams. We hold rotating “engineering rounds” where you can present a deep dive on a technical topic or a recent win, and we maintain active guilds for Ruby, testing, and observability that meet monthly. The atmosphere is supportive but high-autonomy: you’re trusted to manage your own schedule and will rarely be surprised by last-minute rushes.
Our leadership chain includes directors and principal engineers who still write pull requests, so you’ll receive technical guidance from people who genuinely understand the craft. We celebrate wins in a public #props channel and run optional virtual coffee chats to help you get to know the person behind the pull request.
Growth, Benefits & Remote Life
Housecall Pro offers a competitive USD salary aligned with seniority and local market benchmarks in South America. We provide a dedicated education budget for conferences, courses, and books, and we encourage engineers to spend up to 10% of their time on self-directed projects that sharpen the platform. Our career ladder defines clear expectations for advancement to Staff-plus roles, with regular check-ins that focus on the skills you want to build, not just your output.
You’ll receive a company-issued laptop, a reimbursement for internet and co-working space, and flexible paid time off that you’re actually expected to use. We organize annual in-person meetups (when conditions allow) so remote teammates can connect face-to-face. Health and wellness benefits vary by country, but we work with local partners to ensure coverage that makes sense. More than anything, you’ll be building software that directly helps electricians, plumbers, and HVAC pros run their small businesses—work that leaves a visible, positive mark on Main Street every day.
